Let’s face it, even amidst the recent economic downturn, construction costs have exploded in recent years and it seems unlikely that they will reverse any time soon. It is not just labor costs either: the cost of basic materials has also increased the price of building a new home substantially. If you’ve been saving in order to build a house in a special place after you retire, this is all particularly daunting when you recognize that you will be making less money in your later years.
So how do prefabricated structures make perfect economic sense for a retirement dream home? at least three ways:
First, the labor cost component of the construction effort will be drastically reduced since most prefab homes are put up on location in a matter of days rather than weeks. There also are far fewer construction professionals required to do the job than there are for building a conventional house.
Second, prefabricated construction techniques involve more than anything, less volume of materials, with designs that are clean and rather spare, though by no means necessarily spartan. This is not to say that you have to resort to a traditional mobile home for your prefab house, as architects nowadays include as a matter of course high-quality construction materials. Also, a quick Internet search will show just how creative home designers feel entitled to get when it comes to making an impression with prefab designs. After all, since most people are probably thinking “mobile home”, some imagination is warranted in trying to defuse that preconception. Bottom line, as the volume of basic materials in prefab construction tends to be less than for a conventional building, you will probably find yourself spending less overall on your project, even with some high-end touches.
A third way that prefab construction will save you money is the degree to which these homes can incorporate environmentally friendly elements like water catchment, solar paneling (that is built-in to the original design rather than an afterthought bought at Home Depot), and other energy-saving features.
Prefab construction today is often so stylish that many of these homes are indistinguishable from conventional houses, and the more you assess your design options the clearer that it will become that a luxury prefab home is no contradiction in terms.
