Even as children, we enjoy stacking toys on one another — to build fortresses, Lego sets, or castles made of alphabet blocks.  As adults, we can still engage in this fun activity with stackable plastic storage boxes, which serve a triple purpose: keeping things organized, saving space, and indulging our inner child. Being able to stack things neatly on top of one another is a great way to use a small amount of space and it will also ensure that your belongings can be easily located.

Here are some suggestions for creative stackable storage box designs customized for your home.

Practical
No matter where you put your stackable boxes, you probably want to stack them in such a way that you aren’t moving all of them every time you need something.  The most practical thing to do is put the boxes you’ll use most frequently on the top of any design you create.  One way to do this is to designate a closet for all your most used boxes, and put the rest in the rooms where the items would generally belong (books in a library, clothes in a bedroom, etc.).

Visible
If you keep your storage boxes out in the open, you can stack them in a variety of patterns to make them interesting instead of an eyesore.  Try stacking them in a right angled triangle, using progressively taller stacks to make the triangular shape.  Or you can make a pyramid, putting the highest stack in the center.  Another option is to use colored plastic boxes and stack them to make something akin to a music bar visualization.

Tucked Away
Maybe you prefer to put your stackable plastic storage boxes in a closet or under a bed.  Organize them by weight, with the heaviest box on the bottom and the lightest on top.  Stack them against walls or in corners to save even more space, and in a closet, you can place them on either side so that the shapes are snug into the corners instead of using valuable space in the center.
