Many consumers are timid about installing garage door remote control devices because they are afraid of making a mistake. This is unfortunate, because the strategy is quite simple and could probably be done by kids. The first step is to make sure that the remote control unit is compatible with the opener currently installed. Most manufacturers make their own new and replacement units, but there are also universal models available as well. Use the following 7 steps to put that new remote control into use.
Step 1: Close the garage door
Step 2: Make sure to install the right batteries in the remote control
Step 3: Locate the program button on the remote control. It may be found under the battery cover or simply a matter of pressing some of the exterior buttons. Consult the owner’s manual for the specifics of your model.
Step 4: On the garage door opener, there is a “smart” or “learn” switch/button that must be pressed. It may be underneath the cover for the lights. Locate this and depress it once.
Step 5: Point the remote control at the main unit and press the open/close button to synchronize the two devices. This may require one or multiple button pushes, depending on the manufacturer model and type. For the universal type, there are probably sequences of exact pushes that have to be made in order for this to work. Consult the operating instructions very closely.
Step 6: Locate the program button again on the remote control and depress this again. (This is the same button that was used in step #3)
Step 7: Make sure to test the function of the remote from outside and inside the car. Occasionally, there might be a need to repeat a step or two. This is normal due to varied circumstances.
If all is well, you have just installed the remote control on your own — congratulations!
Mentioned above was universal remote control units. These units have been intentionally made by the manufacturers to work on any format. However, no unit is truly universal and you should always make sure that the unit you have bought is compatible with the garage door system that you have installed in your house.
