Task Lighting

From a practical perspective task lighting is the light you need to shave properly or apply make up. Don’t rely of a single bulb in the ceiling to help you do this. Your task lighting should be balanced and cast no shadows. A well lit mirror with lights surrounding it or a strip light fitted just behind the edge, is the perfect task lighting and can also be a focal point for the room.

Ambient Lighting

By day, the ambient lighting should be bright and simulate natural daylight. If you have this free resource in plentiful supply use it. Clear any large windows from window sill clutter. Get some good storage to house all of your bathroom paraphernalia and free up space. Keep window dressing simple and unfussy and use a roller blind for privacy if you don’t have frosted glass. If your bathroom is in a loft space, use a skylight. If you have a small window only frosted glass or a roller blind is necessary.

Enhance this with semi flush or full flush mount ceiling lights with low watt bulbs on a dimmer switch. By day, you have a bright practical space. By night, dimmed ceiling lights will produced a diffused tranquil light for relaxation.

Accent Lights

If you place your bathroom ceiling lights close to a wall, it becomes a feature washed in light. You can choose to use this as a highlight for picture or some great tiles or simply leave it plain if you have a small room. If you have a great looking bathroom sink or shower head a carefully placed spotlight can highlight this and make a feature. TIP: This also works great for highlighting your favorite piece of kitchen or bedroom furniture too. Make sure that any lights fitted near water conform to safety rules. Check with an electrician first. Fun lighting effects include special tap fittings that illuminate water as it runs or tiles with integral lighting for a disco bathroom!

Bathroom lighting is no great mystery. With some careful consideration of needs and space and some research you can find the products that could create your dream bathroom almost overnight!

A sink installed into a countertop above a storage unit, a freestanding unit and a sink attached to a wall are a few of the many ways that this piece of furniture can be installed into the bathroom. The classic and probably most popular choice of sink is the traditional white porcelain model in round, oval or square shape. This style is versatile enough to even fit into small, tight corner spaces.

Porcelain bathroom sinks are now being made in many different color schemes, so it’s possible to have a marine blue, pink or even a sea green sink to produce a totally new bathroom look. With these colors you can create any style and completely change the whole feel of the bathroom. Prior to firing, these sinks can be painted with many different motifs to complement your scheme. After painting the sinks are fired to make the designs durable and permanent.

On the opposite side of the spectrum from porcelain sinks are the exotic sink styles made using expensive teak, mahogany or birch woods. One example of this is wood as sinks can be made out of expensive woods such as teak and mahogany. These types do take a little care though and they must be dried after each use, with a towel and also be treated annually with a new application of wax polish.

Glass sink bowls that are set into a countertop or mounted onto a metal stand are a particular design that is taking off in popularity. It can also come in a variety of colors, sizes and textures. One spectacular design I recently saw was a copper sink sandwiched between two layers of glass. The designs can only really be limited by the imagination.

Sinks are now being made from many other materials such as brass, steel and stainless steel. Stone is also a very organic material from which they are being currently made, but only the sink bowl needs to made out of these materials. Luckily you only need the sink to be made out of these materials otherwise it would become prohibitively expensive.

It is easy to get carried away with your purchase when confronted by so many designs and styles. So it is a good idea to have some sense of your budget prior to choosing which style of bathroom sink is affordable and practical for your requirements.
