When it comes to furnishing the breakfast nook, there are some obvious choices as well as some pieces of furniture that you might not immediately think of. Which pieces of furniture you add to your breakfast nook area depend on the size of your breakfast nook, what furniture already exists in the kitchen, and the decorating style of your home and specifically of your kitchen. Every home is different and there are no hard and fast rules. Essentially, you want to put the furniture that you feel is necessary into the room without making it feel too crowded.

The most obvious choice for furniture for breakfast nooks is a breakfast table. The table will most likely be the largest piece of furniture in the room and will consequently dominate. The shape and size of the table should be determined by the shape and size of the breakfast nook. Normally, you want to table to be as large as possible in order to accommodate as many people as possible. However, sometimes the breakfast nook is very large and it is not necessary to fill the entire space with the table.

The next most obvious choice for breakfast nook furniture is the breakfast nook seating. Of course, you do have a choice to make in this section because the seating could be chairs, benches, or a combination of the two. There are many factors that will help determine what kind of seating you choose such as how many people you need to accommodate, whether your family has children, whether you need extra storage in the breakfast nook, and whether you entertain guests often. Benches will fit more people than chairs so they are preferable to large families with lots of children. If you entertain guests often, you want chairs so that your guests have their own personal space. Benches also offer extra storage space under the seats.

If your breakfast nook is large enough and you have the room, you can consider adding other pieces of kitchen furniture to the mix. One option might be a pantry cabinet. If the kitchen does not have a built in pantry in the regular cabinetry, then a free standing pantry cabinet between the kitchen and breakfast nook would be a great addition. It is close enough to the kitchen to be convenient, but far enough away that it doesn’t have to match the rest of the cabinets exactly. Pantry cabinets are usually not very deep so that you can see the items on each shelf clearly. Since they are thin, it is easy to squeeze one in a breakfast nook especially if the nook has a round kitchen table.

Another kitchen furniture piece that you might consider for the breakfast nook is a small console table. Many homeowners like to have plants or small herb gardens in their kitchens and the window sills in the breakfast nook might not be large enough to hold everything they want to grow. Therefore, a small console table under the windows is the perfect addition. Console tables are preferable because they are unobtrusive and easily blend in.

Most people love that little corner in the kitchen – the breakfast nook. It is such a useful and cozy place to sit and eat your breakfast in the company of your whole family. An informal part of your home, perfect for a meal which is also very informal – in most homes at least. But is you nook working for you?

You could say that there isn’t much to it. A table, a handful of chairs, and you are done. Spice it up a bit by going for a look you actually like – and which fits in with the kitchen and the rest of the home. Make it something worth laying eyes on, something visually inviting. But looks is only one element; there is also the matter of usability – which is not to be taken lightly. Let us look at what sort of meal a breakfast is.

As said, it is often informal. It is the first meal of the day, but also one that often does not take long to overcome, so to speak. Many, many families tend to be in a bit of a hurry in the morning – that is just the way it is. A practical feature of a breakfast nook would be to allow easy access to every seat around the table. While benches – especially fitted benches – are nice, they also tend to make it more difficult to access some of the seating available. This could make it quite difficult getting to and from your seat – a cause for trouble with teenage tempers flaring.

If you want fast access, put individual tables around your breakfast table. Make sure there is ample clearance behind those chairs too – otherwise the problem will remain unsolved. If you don’t have too much space in the nook area, try to get some relatively compact chairs with no armrests and such adornments. Also make sure your breakfast nook table isn’t too big and heavy. If space is limited, a round or oval table is a lot easier to get around, than one with sharp corners.

This should help you get a more usable breakfast nook – and to get out the door a bit faster in the morning.
