When you are on the lookout for a new bed for your kids, especially if they share a room, you can’t beat the old bunk bed system for both convenience and comfort. Traditional bunks are not all that different from the futon bunk beds we’ll be talking about here. In fact, the main difference has to do with the price and some subtle features about the futon mattress itself. There are a few different models of the futon bunk that we’ll be going over.

To begin with, keep in mind that the futon became popular here in the West some several decades ago. It was popular in part because it was a new fad at the time, but it was also a big hit because it was very user-friendly to the type of lifestyle we have here. While in the countries of the far East, the futon takes on a somewhat different layout and design, here it is more of a convertible couch and bed type arrangement. Futon beds are more for secondary sleeping or extra seating here, where they are still very much the traditional sleeping arrangements in countries of the East, like in Japan.

One of the more popular bunk styles of futon is using a twin size mattress up top and the same down below. This is the standard style and one that you will find is quickly the easiest to set up, giving your child’s room the most free room once it is in place. Another option is to go with a twin mattress in the top bunk and a full size mattress in the bottom. This gives the bottom bed more of a larger bed for sleeping, but it also provides more seating area for when your children’s friends are over playing video games or what have you in their room. There is another style that can give a different type of flexible option, the loft bed style of bunk. This one has the upper portion of the bunk but leaves the space below open. This can accommodate a desk or any type of storage system for toys, games, etc. All in all, for $350 – 650 USD, futon bunk beds make great choices throughout your child’s developing years.
