When decorating, think of each room as having layers. The first layer is the paint on the walls and ceiling, as well as the flooring, whether it is carpet, wood or another product. Once the first layer is completed, the second layer can begin, which is furniture, and the third is accessories, including rugs, window treatments, wall art and lamps.
Each type of accessory has a prominent part in the room and should be taken into careful consideration, and each layer will add another dimension to the room. While accessories are not always necessary, they do add a lot to any room while showing off the style and personality of the homeowner.
Some people like to keep their floors bare, but by adding rugs, it not only adds warmth and color, but also that aforementioned other dimension. A rug can go over carpet easily, especially the shorter Berber style weave, and rugs work great over wood or stone tile.
Oval rugs have a few places where they make great accessory pieces depending on the space where they will go and the size of the rug. For a large rug in a rectangular room, an oval shape is perfect. A rectangular rug would work as well, but oval will add a softer feel with its rounded edges.
Other contemporary rugs can add a nice splash of color or can be used as a way to warm and soften a room. When a rug is placed over a wood or stone floor, it centers the room as well as adds comfort. Rugs are a grounding spot for furniture or a way to mark an entry way, they can also act as a way to define an area in a room, particularly a large room that may double as a lounge and a dining room or a dining room and a kitchen. By placing rugs in the two separate areas they can be given a distinguishing look.
Remember the dimensions and layers of decorating. Start with the predominant colors that are on the walls and the furniture and use the rug and other accessories to complement them. All of a sudden, the room will be complete!
