These days there are many ways to organize a home. Some people are privileged enough to afford hiring someone to clean up clutter for them. Others prefer using cabinets, or have a room solely for the storage of objects that are not used year round. Still other homeowners use systems of labeling to keep track of objects. However, before we go on to the more complicated strategies of organization, we should not overlook the basics. One of the simpler ways to organize a home is with plastic storage boxes.

When choosing storage containers for your home, you will have to choose among different materials. There are cardboard storage boxes, aluminum storage boxes, and other kinds of storage boxes. Plastic storage boxes, however, are the best option for any home. Plastic storage boxes are more durable than cardboard storage boxes. Cardboard storage boxes cannot keep water out, and may even be damaged when exposed to moisture. Plastic storage boxes, on the other hand, are waterproof and will keep its contents dry and safe. Aluminum storage boxes are also durable, and are stronger than plastic. Its downfall, on the other hand, is that it may rust after a prolonged period of time without regular upkeep. This may even cause it to disintegrate. Eventually plastic storage boxes will turn out stronger than aluminum storage boxes. Plastic storage boxes are also cheaper than both cardboard and aluminum storage boxes, since the materials they are made of require less processing and are easier to access.

Once you have made your sensible decision to purchase a plastic storage box, you will need to know what you will be keeping inside it. For example, if you are planning to store your electronics inside your plastic storage box, you will need a fairly large storage container that has dividers of different sizes. You will be storing remote controls, batteries, and wires inside this storage box and you will of course need compartments of different sizes. A plastic storage box can even be a decorative feature in your home.

Keeping things in storage isn’t hard. You just throw them into a box and stuff them away where you don’t need to look at them. But well planned storage makes it simple to get the things back out again. Here’s a few examples of the best ways to keep your things in different parts of the home.

If you have enough room in the closet to keep some extra boxes of clothes, or toys, or anything else, I find it convenient to have some sort of stackable boxes that won’t slide around on top of each other and potentially fall over. It makes them easy to stick in the closet in the first place, and easy to get back out when I need them again, without risking dropping anything on my toe. And I like my toes. I had some trouble with this when I got containers with slick tops, and I’ll never make that mistake again.

If you’re keeping things in the garage, on the other hand, moving them around isn’t such a big issue, so you can probably get larger boxes. In fact, getting some plastic storage bins that are too big might not be a bad idea – you can just put it into the corner or against the wall, put whatever you need into it, seal it up, and not think about it at all, like a large airtight chest. That’s the big draw for plastic storage in the garage, and it helps keep things clean.

These are just a couple examples that are applicable in other rooms too. Attics would need smaller boxes most likely, while anything outside can probably be a big bigger. Having a clear container helps remind you of what’s inside the bins, so you don’t need to open anything too. For more tips like this, be sure to visit my blog, Storage Artist!

Plastic storage bins have been a real time saver for finding parts in the garage. Accumulation of parts is what happens over time in the garage if you are a do it yourself kind of person. You have probably amassed plenty of loose hardware, fittings and brackets of all kinds and sizes. The small things like nuts and bolts are hard to throw out because you can always find another use for a screw that has been originally used for something else. My dream wall in my garage would look like the hardware stores nail bin wall. I would have all kinds of large plastic storage bins starting from the floor and move my way up the wall to the smaller ones near eye level.

The rolling industrial shelf style on wheels that have the yellow, blue or the red stackable plastic storage bins are the most popular that I have seen, there are now new clear plastic storage bins that will fit in those as well so if you like clear bins, be on the look out for those.

So how do you handle the small parts that accumulate on the average garage bench? The easiest for me is to put all the small parts that come from torn up motors, old radios, toasters and such is to have one bin set aside and place all small miscellaneous parts into the bin. Then, once every couple of weeks, I pick up the bin and then go to the plastic storage bin rack and sort everything while placing the parts into the different bins.

There are many ways that you can keep everything in order and a set of plastic storage bins simply makes the task a little bit easier.

If you are looking for places to put your extra hardware, having one of these stackable plastic storage bins just might be the trick to keeping you organized and able to easily find any part you need fast.
