First it is important to check the valves on the radiator. The valves work most effectively when they are all of the way opened or shut.

Second check the vent blocks. They can be routinely blocked by paint, rust or corrosion. If these vents are blocked then it prevents the steam from entering the radiator effectively and reduces efficiency. Third you need to check the slope of your input pipes. They should be sloped toward the radiator in order to ensure the most efficiency. If you find your pipe is not sloped it is possible to put a 1/4 inch piece of wood under the pipe to slope if properly.

The last thing you need to check to ensure proper maintenance of your radiator is if the valves are leaking. The leaking valves are easily fixed by tightening the cap nuts on the unit. When looking to buy a radiator it is ok the buy cheap traditional radiators if you plan on following this maintenance schedule to ensure they are working properly. Radiators provide a good source of heat for homes and by makign sure they are in good working order their life span will be dramatically increased.
