The shag area rug, the less expensive contemporary cousin of the ancient Greeks’ goat-skin rug, has been a popular choice for the hearth-side for a number of years.  However, since the recent fashion in home design for a return to sanded, varnished and gleaming floorboards or the hard-wearing, easily washable substitute for a concrete floor, laminated boards, shaggy rugs have really gained in popularity.

Whilst appreciating the beauty, individuality and appeal of a natural wood floor, or the practicality of the easy-clean laminate, there is something altogether too austere about bare boards that a shag rug remedies instantly.  By the nature of their design, the luxury of a looped pile that is not shorn as with a typical rug, but is left with its loop intact, shag rugs add the appeal of texture and warmth to bare boards. Whether at the living room hearth to enhance the warmth and romance of the fireside or at the bedside to warm bare toes in nocturnal visits, the shaggy nature of these rugs holds an appeal over wooden floors throughout the house.

Yes, all over the house: consider also the play value of an appropriately colored shaggy rug in a kids’ bedroom: green or brown tones offer adventure value as a jungle for lego men or action figures, or pastures for play farms, whilst a shaggy rug in shades of blue can become an imaginary ocean for little boats or play-figures.  Ice white makes for fantastic arctic themed games, but the idea of any white textiles in a kids room may not be wise, particularly as cleaning has to be considered when buying a shag rug: as these are not really a throw-into-the-wash kind of rug.  They do tend to require more specialist cleaning, although are generally fine to be hovered regularly with a standard vacuum cleaner.

So, if your boards are bare but not bearable, consider shag carpet area rugs to add texture, warmth and fun around the home!
